The Tokyo Station Hotel

Sleeping Inside a National Monument

Location

1-9-1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-0005, Japan

Opened

2012

Tokyo Station's Marunouchi building was designed by architect Kingo Tatsuno and opened in 1914 — a red-brick European Renaissance structure that has served as the capital's primary rail terminus for more than a century. The station was damaged during the Second World War and partially rebuilt, losing its original domes in the process; the 2012 restoration, completed ahead of the building's centenary, reinstated them according to the original drawings, returning the structure to its 1914 configuration. The Tokyo Station Hotel, reopened as part of this restoration, occupies the building's upper floors.

To stay in The Tokyo Station Hotel is to sleep inside a building that is not merely old but actively remembered — a structure whose silhouette is one of the most photographed in Japan, whose operational continuity across more than a century of Japanese history gives it a different weight than a period building repurposed for hospitality. Shinkansen trains depart and arrive below the floors where guests sleep; the daily rhythm of the station pulses through the building's bones.

Rooms facing the building's interior — looking into the station's operational core or the dome interiors — offer an unusual perspective: not the external landmark view but the building's own architectural logic, as experienced from within its walls. Rooms facing Marunouchi look outward toward the business district's towers and, on certain clear days, toward the Imperial Palace gardens. The contrast between these two perspectives reflects the building's own dual nature: simultaneously a piece of national heritage and a functioning node in a modern transit network.

The dining program and public spaces maintain the quality appropriate to the hotel's position. For travelers with an interest in Japanese architectural history, infrastructure heritage, or simply in the experience of occupying a building that still functions at the center of public life after more than a century, The Tokyo Station Hotel provides access that no other form of engagement makes available.
